Sundays Live welcomes pianist Svetlana Smolina, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “an outstanding Russian pianist with a luxuriant tone” and the New York Times as “mesmerizing.”
Smolina has performed with orchestras and in recitals worldwide. Recent notable solo appearances with orchestras include the Mariinsky Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonia, and the Orchestre National de France. She is a recipient of the New Names Scholarship program in Russia and has been a prizewinner at many international competitions, including the Citta di Senigallia International Piano Competition in Italy and the Kingsville International Piano Competition in Miami, Florida. In 2011, Smolina joined the piano faculty of the Philadelphia International Music Festival.
The program includes Robert Schumann’s Arabesque; Franz Schubert: 3 Impromptus, op. 90; Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturne in C Minor, op. 48, no. 1 and Ballade, no. 1; Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Preludes (selections) and Variations on a Theme of Corelli, op. 42; and Richard Strauss and Adolf Schulz Evler’s Concert Arabesque on the Beautiful Blue Danube.
